«Partnership for Safety!»
November 14 – 20, 2011
November 20, 2011 – the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims
The Road Safety Week is an annual meeting of people who unite in order to make the Ukrainian roads safer. Every year, all the interested parties report about the results of joint activities, and choose the platform on which the society is to build safer roads.
Road traffic deaths and injuries are a huge obstacle in the way of development of our country. Over 1.300.000 people die each year on the world’s roads, and around 50.000 suffer non-fatal injuries.
Ukraine is at the fifth place for mortality rate from traffic accidents in Europe. According to the official statistics, last year 4.709 people died in road accidents, and 38.917 were injured. Every third victim is a young person under the age of 29. In fact, we lose on the roads the basis of the economic potential of the state.
In addition to the tremendous human tragedies, the road accidents cause considerable material damage. According to the World Bank estimations, the loss of the Ukrainian economy from road accidents amounts to 5 billion dollars annually.
The World Health Organization experts warn that if no urgent action is taken by 2020, road accidents will become the main cause of death worldwide, leaving behind cardiovascular disease and AIDS.
Given these alarming tendencies, on March 2, 2010 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that proclaimed 2011-2020 a Decade of Action for Road Safety. The goal of the Decade is to reduce significantly the loss of human lives on the roads.
The President of Ukraine, in his «Address to the citizens of Ukraine on the occasion of the launch of the UN’s Decade of Action for Road Safety» (May 11, 2011), called on all the public authorities, political parties, movements, non-governmental organizations and citizens of Ukraine to support the abovementioned Global Initiative of the United Nations, and take decisive actions to prevent catastrophic consequences of road accidents.
To overcome the rising toll of deaths on the roads, the PARTNERSHIP between the government, business, NGOs, mass-media and every Ukrainian in particular is needed.
That is why the Road Safety Week 2011 is being held under the slogan «The Partnership for the Road Safety!». The Partnership is open to anyone, who wishes to join the movement for safer roads. Together, in 10 years we can change the situation on the Ukrainian roads for the better.
